Professor Emeritus of International Management at the Open University Business School
The British psychologist Derek Salman Pugh (born in 1930) is a well renowned organisational researcher, university lecturer, consultant and influential author of papers and 15 books including the first three volumes of the Aston Resarch Programme.
He is Professor Emeritus of International Management (1983-2000) and Director of Research at the Open University School of Management. Previously, he taught at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland (1953-1957), Birmingham (UK) (1957-60), Aston (1960-1967) and the London Business School (1968-1969). Additionally, he held lectures in France, Germany, Israel and Italy.
He earned his academical merits at the University of Edinburgh (MA 1953, MSc 1956) and the University of Aston (DSc 1973).
He inaugurated and led the Aston Research Programme, a major series of studies on the structure, functioning and performance of organisations, and the effects on the attitudes and behaviour of groups and individuals within them. This began at the University of Aston and later continued at other centres throughout the world.
Professor Pugh contributed to the conceptual development of the discipline of Organisational Behaviour in business schools and was appointed the first British Professor of the subject at the London Business School in 1970. He joined the OU in 1983 as Professor of Systems and since 1988 was Professor of International Management at The Open University Business School (Emeritus Professor from 2000). He is joint author of a book on the processes involved in gaining a PhD and regularly consults on the design of doctoral programmes and the training of research supervisors. In 2000 he was one of the first three professors in the field of Business and Management Studies to be elected an Academician of the UK Academy of Learned Societies in the Social Sciences. He is renowned for the Pugh Matrix, a frequently used tool within OD.
Pugh is honoured by the Open University with the yearly award of the Professor-Derek-Pugh-Award for the best student in the OUBS's Certificate Programme.
