Michael E. Porter

Michael Porter is the C. Roland Christensen Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School and a leading authority on competitive strategy.

He also lectures in the school's programs for senior executives and speaks widely on competitive strategy and international competitiveness to business and government audiences throughout the world.

Michael is the author of 14 books and more than 45 articles. His book, Competitive Strategy: Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors (1980), is recognized as the leading work in its field. In its forty-fifth printing, it has been translated into 15 languages.

A frequent consultant to business, financial institutions, and government, Michael counts among his clients such leading firms as AT&T, DuPont, Crédit Suisse, First Boston, Procter & Gamble, Republic National Corporation, and Royal Dutch/Shell. He is on the boards of directors of Lotus Development Corporation, Alpha-Beta Technologies, and Hyatt Legal Plans.

In 1983, Michael was appointed by President Reagan to the President's Commission on Industrial Competitiveness, and continues to play an active role in economic policy with Congress, business groups, and as an advisor to foreign governments. Michael's most recent initiative is a study of economic development in America's inner cities.

Michael received his B.S.E. in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering from Princeton University, an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, and a Ph.D. in Business Economics from Harvard University in 1973.

He has received numerous honors and awards for work in his field and was a fellow of the International Academy of Management (1985), the Academy of Management (1988), and the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (1991).
