Robert N. Anthony, Ross Graham Walker Professor of Management Controls, Emeritus.
Professor Anthony has A.B. A.M. (hon) and L.H.D. (hon) degrees from Colby College and M.B.A. and D.C.S. degrees from Harvard University.
Dr. Anthony joined the Harvard Business School staff in 1940, and, except for leaves of absences was a faculty member until his retirement in 1983. He helped organize the Management Development Institute (IMEDE), Lausanne, and the Indonesia Management Development Institute (IPMI), Jakarta. He has given lectures or short courses in North America, Central America, Europe, Australia, and Asia.
He is the author or co-author of 27 books; they have been translated into 13 languages. His Accounting: Text and Cases, (now Tenth Edition), Management Control Systems (Ninth Edition), and Management Control in Nonprofit Organizations, (Sixth Edition) were among the first text and casebooks on these subjects. His Essentials of Accounting is the most widely used programmed text on accounting; it has both print and software versions. He is the author of over 100 articles.
In 1965-68 he was Assistant Secretary of Defense, Controller. In World War II he was Lt. Commander in the Navy Supply Corps. He was a member of the Comptroller General's Research and Education Advisory Panel, 1973-87. He was an original member of the Audit Committee of the City of New York and the Town Auditor of Waterville Valley, NH. (population 199). He was president of the American Accounting Association, trustee and chairman of the Board of Colby College, trustee and treasurer of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, a directer of Warnaco, Inc., and a director of Carborundum Company. He was a member of the concepts task force and the nonprofit task force of the Financial Accounting Standards Board. He was a consultant or expert witness for a number of business, government, industrial, and nonprofit organizations.
He was the 46th member of the Accounting Hall of Fame. He has received awards from the Executive Office of the President, U.S. General Accounting Office, Department of Defense, Federal Government Accountants Association, Beta Alpha Psi, Academy of Management, Colby College, and Harvard Business School Alumni Association.
