Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Peter Mertens was chair of the Department of Information Systems 1 at the Friedrich-Alexander-University (FAU) Erlangen-Nuremberg and director of a Computer Science Research Group in the Engineering School until 2005.

Prof. Mertens (born 1937) studied industrial engineering at the Darmstadt University of Technology (TU Darmstadt). He also worked at the Technische Universität München (TUM), the Johannes Kepler Universität (JKU) Linz and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Before returning to the university he was an employee and managing director of a large software company.

Prof. Mertens authored numerous books which have been translated into Chinese, English, Italian, and Russian. His major research topics are computer-aided planning and control systems, IT in production and logistics, supply chain management, personalization of information processing, artificial intelligence and offshoring/nearsourcing. He is honorary doctor at five universities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, bearer of the ring of honour of the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration (WU), fellow of the German Computer Society (GI), honorary member of the Association of University Professors of Management in the German Speaking Countries (VHB) and bearer of the German Federal Cross of Merit.
